Key Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Communications Manager, is responsible for the technical support and maintenance of the City wide radio system and equipment. 

 

1.      Installs, maintains, repairs and programs all city owned trunked radio system infrastructure components. 
2.      Maintains, repairs and programs all mobile, base and portable radios including any associated equipment on the city owned trunked radio system.
3.      Ensures the operation of the radio system by all radio users. Plans, coordinates and evaluates these operations as required. 
4.      Assists with the planning of trunked radio system upgrades including equipment programming and installation.
5.      Develops procedures and specifications for the implementation of new infrastructure components. 
6.      Maintains all maintenance records for applicable equipment. 
7.      Calibrates and tests all related tools and testing equipment. 
8.      Provide support to radio users and communications center staff, and assist user groups with the development of their trunking fleetmaps.
9.      Communicate with vendor technical support teams and directly interact with trunked radio system users, as required.
10.    Provide system statistics and future upgrade requirements and other electronic needs such as UPS equipment, vehicle electronics, etc.
11.    Other related duties as required. 

Competencies

 

1.      Graduate of a recognized two-year post secondary Electronics Technology or Servicing Program OR equivalent Military Program.
2.      Six years experience in radio communications (trunked radio systems preferred). 
3.      Successful completion of Motorola training on trunked radio system would be an asset.
4.      Thorough Knowledge of the principles and practices related to the installation, maintenance, repair and programming of radio communications and wireless equipment.
5.      Considerable knowledge of Windows, Networking, and VMS (virtual machine) environments is essential.
6.      Knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of electronics and radio communications.
7.      Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
8.      Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision.
9.      Incumbents are required to attend Motorola’s Training Academy.
10.    Must possess valid Class 5 Novice 1 (minimum) drivers’ license.
11.    Physical ability to perform the assigned duties, including complete color vision.
12.    Ability to work in confined spaces and to work outside under varying weather conditions.
