Key Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Manager, Integrated Health & Wellness, this position is responsible for delivering evidence-based health, fitness, strength and conditioning, injury-prevention, and active rehabilitation programming to sworn and civilian members of the Regina Police Service. Working in close collaboration with the Integrated Health Physiotherapist, this role utilizes medical and functional information to design and deliver individualized and group-based exercise therapy and conditioning programs that support injury recovery, return-to-work (RTW), operational readiness, and long-term wellness. The role also provides Service-wide wellness education, fitness training, and preventative programming aligned with the physical and operational demands of policing.
1. Conduct comprehensive fitness, functional movement, and overall wellness through functional movement screens, and health evaluations to inform safe and effective program design.
2. Design, implement, and deliver individualized and group-based strength, conditioning, fitness, and wellness programs, including preventative conditioning, unit-specific training, and operational readiness programming.
3. Develop and deliver wellness education initiatives related to physical conditioning, injury prevention, nutrition, sleep, shift work, stress management, and recovery.
4. Collaborate with the Integrated Health Physiotherapist to plan, implement, and supervise active rehabilitation and exercise therapy programs for members recovering from occupational and non-occupational injuries.
5. Provide supervised exercise therapy to support early and safe return-to-work, modified duties, and the gradual restoration of operational fitness, in accordance with medical guidance and functional restrictions.
6. Monitor member progress, evaluate program effectiveness, and modify fitness, conditioning, and rehabilitation plans based on clinical guidance, functional outcomes, and best practices.
7. Analyze the physical demands and risk factors associated with policing duties to develop proactive injury prevention strategies and targeted conditioning programs for frontline and high-risk units.
8. Support fitness preparation, training, and testing for police applicants, Police College recruits, and Service-specific fitness standards, including POPAT preparation.
9. Communicate and collaborate with Integrated Health staff, EFAP/CISM resources, training partners, and other healthcare professionals regarding member progress, injury management, and return-to-work planning.
10. Develop and support Service-wide wellness initiatives, challenges, and special event programming aligned with Integrated Health & Wellness objectives.
11. Maintain accurate clinical, fitness, and participation records, including documentation of assessments, exercise therapy sessions, and outcomes in Cority, and support data collection and reporting to inform injury prevention and wellness strategies.
12. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Competencies
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Human Kinetics, Physiology, or a related discipline is required; a Master’s Degree in a related field is considered an asset.
2. Preference will be given to candidates who already hold the Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) certification through the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP). Candidates who do not currently hold this certification must obtain and maintain CEP certification within six (6) months of hire as a condition of employment, in addition to meeting all provincial practice requirements in Saskatchewan and maintaining current CPR and First Aid certification.
3. Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in exercise prescription, strength and conditioning, and clinical or therapeutic exercise environments.
4. Demonstrated experience working with first responder populations; experience with tactical, military, or other high-performance populations is considered an asset.
5. Advanced knowledge of exercise physiology, strength and conditioning principles, injury prevention strategies, and rehabilitative exercise practices.
6. Demonstrated ability to assess, interview, and counsel adult populations regarding fitness, wellness, and physical readiness, and to design and implement safe, evidence-based programming.
7. Proven ability to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate individualized and group-based fitness, conditioning, and health promotion programs.
8. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively within an interdisciplinary health and operational environment.
9. Demonstrated ability to manage confidential medical and health information in compliance with applicable legislation and Regina Police Service policies.
10. Strong organizational, documentation, and program management skills, including maintaining accurate clinical, fitness, and participation records.
11. Ability to work in office, gym, training, and field environments; meet physical demands related to exercise demonstration and movement assessment; and work flexible hours to support shift-based operations.
12. Required to pass the Regina Police Service security clearance process.
